යුද ජයග්‍රහණය තහවුරු කර ගැනීම සඳහත් අනාගත කැරලි ඇතිවීම වැළැක්වීම සදහාත් ප්‍රමාණවත් පියවර ගැනීමට ආණ්ඩුව අසමත් වී ඇති බව සදහන් කරන සරත් ෆොන්සේකා මහතා නාස්තිය හා දූෂණයත් ජනතාවගේ අයිතීන් කප්පාදු කිරීමත් හේතුවෙන් ජනතාව ආර්ථික වශයෙන් විදින දුෂ්කරතා වඩාත් වැඩිවී ඇති බවද පෙන්වාදෙයි. ‍මවු බිමට සාමය සහ සෞභාග්‍ය ගෙන එන නව යුගයක් කරා රට ගෙන යාමට සමත්වන්නේ නම් හමුදාව විශාල කැප කිරීමක් කර ලබා ගත් ජය අපතේ නොයනු ඇති බවද ඔහු එහි සදහන්කර තිබේ.

General Sarath Fonsenka nursing political ambitions? – asks Hindu

Chief of Defence Staff Sarath Fonsenka, who as Army chief led the 2006-09 Eelam War IV, has announced that he has “finished his obligations” towards the military.

In his address at the 60th Army anniversary parade here on Tuesday, General Fonseka said: “This may be the last occasion I make an address of this nature to officers and men of the Sri Lanka Army. Although I am still serving in the Army I have finished my obligations dedicated to the Army as I have reached different heights at this time.”

General Fonsenka’s statement created ripples in political circles here. There have been speculative reports in the local media to the effect that General Fonsenka nursed political ambitions.

General Fonseka, who led the 2006-09 Eelam War IV, was relieved of his job as Army Chief and designated as Chief of Defence Staff under a new Parliamentary Act which came into effect on July 15.

His latest statement has attracted attention as a there is the possibility of a general election preceded by a presidential poll in the next few months.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa described the outcome of the Southern Provincial Council election as an “overwhelming mandate” for the ruling alliance.

In his statement on the victory of the ruling alliance, Mr. Rajapaksa said the mandate had encouraged his government to go ahead with its plan to reawaken the nation with renewed strength.

“The clear and overwhelming mandate given by the Southern people at this election is a decisive and strong message to those groups trying to create misconceptions about the government and also to the international community,” said Mr. Rajapaksa.

The election outcome triggered varied reactions among a section of the political parties and the media. The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), which polled almost 11 per cent of votes cast in the home district of the President, said it was a turning point in the political scenario.

JVP general secretary Tilvin Silva told reporters that the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) recorded an overall decrease of 25,491 votes when compared with the 2005 presidential election.

2008 මැයි මාසයේ පැවති නැඟෙනහිර පළාත් සභා මැතිවරණයේ සිට ඌව පළාත් සභා මැතිවරණය දක්වා සිදුවූයේ එක්සත් ජනතා නිදහස් සන්ධානයේ ඡන්ද ප්‍රතිශතය 52% සිට 72% දක්වා වැඩිවී එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂයේ ඡන්ද ප්‍රතිශතය 42% සිට 22%ක අවමයකට බැසීමය. නමුත් දකුණු පළාත් සභා ප්‍රතිඵලය මේ ප්‍රවණතාවයේ පැහැදිළි අපගමණයක් පෙන්නුම් කරයි. ඒ අනුව රාජපක්ෂ රෙජීමයේ ජනප්‍රියතාව වැටෙමින් පවතින බවත් එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂය එහි වාසිය ලබා ගනිමින් සිටින බවත් පැහැදිළිය.

රාජපක්ෂ රෙජීමයේ 80%ක් 90%ක් ලබා ගන්නවායැයි කියූ “පොර ටෝක්” කෙසේවෙතත්, මෙතෙක් නොවූ විරූ ලෙස මහජන මුදල් මැතිවරණ ප්‍රචාරක කටයුතු සඳහා යෙදීමෙන් හා මැදමුලන “ෆ්‍රයිඩ් රයිස් දන්සැල්” පැවැත්වීමෙන්ද පසු රාජපක්ෂ රෙජීමයට ලබා ගත හැකිවූ ඡන්ද ප්‍රතිශතය 68% දක්වා පහත බැස ඇත. ඒ අතරම එජාපය ඌවෙන් ලබා ගත් 22% ක අවමයේ සිට 26%ක ඡන්ද ප්‍රතිශතයේ වැඩිවීමක් පෙන්නුම් කොට ඇත.

A New Beginning: TREND REVERSES! UPFA LOSES ITS POPULARITY while UNP INCREASES ITS BY 4%

Numerically, the Southern Provincial Council election result was not a victory for the UNP. We should have done better. However, it clearly marks a ‘New Beginning’ where the trend has now been reversed. Starting from the Eastern Province in May 2008, UPFA gradually increased its share from 52% in Eastern to 72% in Uva. Meanwhile UNP’s percentage fell from 42% to 22% till August 2009.

In Southern Provincial Council elections despite the high expectations of the Rajapakse regime to achieve more than 80-90%, it could score only 68%.

The results clearly show a reversal of the trend. In spite of the colossal amount of public money spent in campaigning and grand ‘Fried Rice Dansel’ at Medamulana, it is crystal clear UPFA is losing ground. The 72% share they showed in Uva has dropped to 68% in South – the most prominent UPFA stronghold. Meanwhile UNP has gained the 4% UPFA lost.

President tells Wimal Weerawansa to fly a kite; PBJ back at Treasury

Wimal Weerawansa who left Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) in support of the current Rajapaksha regime received a major blow today.

According to Daily Mirror, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has reappointed Dr. P.B. Jayasundara as the treasury secretary with immediate effect, the government information department said today. The Supreme Court last week gave Dr. P.B. Jayasundara relief to resume service in the state sector.

National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa has earlier said that his party will oppose any moves to re-appoint Dr. P.B Jayasundara to his former post as the Treasury Secretary to the finance ministry saying it will give a wrong impression to the West on state issues.

Lanka e-News reports President has blasted Wimal Weerawansa for making statements to the press without consulting him, as a partner of an alliance.

මගේ අදහස නැත යන්නයි. ඉන්දියාව බහුතරය හින්දු බැතිමතුන් වෙසෙන රටකි. එරට ජනගහණයෙන් හින්දූන්ගේ ප්‍රතිශතය 80% කි. හින්දූහු ගවයා දේවත්වයෙන් අදහති. ඉන්දියාවේ සුළුතර මුස්ලිම් ජනතාව ගවයන් මැරීම ගැන පවා සාම්ප්‍රදායික හින්දූන් එකහෙළා විරුද්ධය. එහෙව් රටක, අහිංසා ධර්මය මත පදනම් වූ හින්දු කෝවිලක මී ගවයින් බිල්ලට දෙන්නේය කීම විහිළුවකි.

මෝඩ පාලකයෝ හැමවිටම තොරතුරු සඳහා කේලාම්කාරයන් මත විශ්වාසය තබති. මේ රජ කපටීන් ගොත ගොතා කියන්නේ තමන් ඇසීමට කැමති කතා මිස ඇත්ත නොවේයයි ඔවුන්ට කල්පනා වන්නේ නැත. තමන්ගේ සතුරන්ගේ වැරදි ගැන මේ කපටියන් කරන ඇදබාන ඕනෑම මුසාවාදයක් ඔවුන් විශ්වාස කරන්නේ ඒ සිතිවිල්ල සුවදායක නිසාය.

චන්ද්‍රිකා කුමාරතුංග හිටපු ජනාධිපතිනිය හැමවිටම හරි යැයි මම නොකියමි. මමද ඇය දරුණු ලෙස විවේචනය කොට ඇත්තෙමි. එහෙත් කවුරුන් ගැන වුවත් සොයා නොබලා බේගල් ඇදබෑම මාධ්‍ය සදාචාරයට හොඳ නැත. අපේ මාධ්‍යකරුවන් කඩේ යනකොට වුවද මීට වඩා ටිකක් හොයා බලා යෑම හොඳය.

Sri Lankan Soldiers Open Fire on Refugees Fleeing Camp, Wound two – Bloomberg

Sri Lankan soldiers fired at refugees trying to escape from a camp in the country’s north, wounding two of them, the Defense Ministry said.

The incident occurred yesterday at the Menik Farm, according to a statement posted on the Media Centre for National Security’s Web site today. The refugees attacked soldiers guarding the camp with “clubs and stones.”

The soldiers defended themselves with “warning fire” after one of the refugees tried to throw a hand grenade, according to the statement. Police have arrested 19 refugees.

More than 280,000 people, mostly Tamils, have been held in camps since Sri Lanka’s army defeated the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in May, ending its 26-year fight for a separate Tamil homeland in the north and east.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon sent his political affairs deputy Lynn Pascoe to the South Asian island nation on Sept. 16 to press for a swift release of the refugees.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa said earlier this month he wants to achieve reconciliation with the Tamil community and bring permanent peace to the country. Tamils make up almost 12 percent of Sri Lanka’s 20 million population. Sinhalese account for 74 percent, according to a 2001 census.

Sri Lanka on Sept. 15 rejected an assertion by Navi Pillay, the UN human rights commissioner, that Tamil refugees are being held in “internment” camps, saying they will leave when security is established and the region is cleared of mines.

The government is undertaking a program providing relief, resettlement and reconciliation to displaced people, Mahinda Samarasinghe, Sri Lanka’s minister for disaster management and human rights, said in an address to the UN Human Rights Council the same day.
