ආණ්ඩුවේ හෙළුව වසා ගන්න ජනපති මාධ්‍ය ඒකකයෙන් මාධ්‍යයට බලපෑම්

දකුණු පළාත් සභා මැතිවරණයෙන් එක්සත් ජනතා නිදහස් සන්ධානය අපේක්ෂාකළ මැතිවරණ ප්‍රතිඵලය නොලැබීමත් සමඟ එම කඩා වැටීම ජනමාධ්‍යයෙන් ප්‍රකාශයට පත්වීම වැළැක්වීම සදහා ජනාධිපති මාධ්‍ය ඒකකය සෘජුව මැදිහත්වී ඇති බව ජනමාධ්‍ය ආයතනවලින් ලැබෙන ආරංචි මාර්ග සදහන් කරයි. තමන් දකුණු පළාත් සභා මැතිවරණයෙන් 90%ක පමණ ඡන්ද ප්‍රතිශතයක් ලබා ගන්නා බව ආණ්ඩුව මුලින් ප්‍රකාශ කළේය.

නමුත් ආණ්ඩුවට ලැබී ඇත්තේ ඊට වඩා බෙහෙවින් අඩු 68%ක පමණ ඡන්ද ප්‍රතිශතයකි. නමුත් එම පසු බැසීම වසන් කිරීම සදහා සියලු ජනමාධ්‍යන්හි පාලනය අතට ගැනීමට ජනාධිපති මාධ්‍ය ඒකකය ක්‍රියාකර ඇතැයි වාර්තාවේ.

මෙහි පළමු පියවර ලෙස ඊයේ රාත්‍රී සියලු විද්‍යුත් මාධ්‍යවල ප්‍රවෘත්ති විකාශයන්හි මැතිවරණ ප්‍රතිඵල වි‍ශ්ලේෂණය සදහා ජනාධිපති මාධ්‍ය ඒකකය මැදිහත්වී තිබේ. එහි ප්‍රතිඵලයක් ලෙස බොහෝ මාධ්‍යවල ඊයේ රාත්‍රී ප්‍රවෘත්ති විකාශයන්හි මැතිවරණයට අදාල පුවත්වල අන්තර්ගතය එක සමාන විය.

එමෙන්ම අද සියලු ජාතික පුවත්පත්වල ප්‍රධාන පුවත එකම අන්තර්ගතයක් ගෙන ඇති අතර සියලු පුවත්පත්වල ප්‍රධාන ඡායාරූපය ලෙස ජනාධිපතිවරයාගේ එකම ඡායාරූපය යොදාගෙන ඇත. එම ඡායාරූපයද ප්‍රධාන පුවතේ අන්තර්ගතයද පුවත්පත් කතුවරුන්ට යවා ඇත්තේ ජනාධිපති මාධ්‍ය ඒකකය විසින් යැයි විශ්වාස කටයුතු ආරංචි මාර්ග හෙළි කරයි. එය අප රටේ ජනමාධ්‍ය නිදහස පිළිබද නිවැරදිම චිත්‍රය අපට මවා දෙනු ඇත.

චන්ද්‍රිකා බණ්ඩාරනායක කුමාරතුංග හිටපු ජනාධිපතිනියගේ පියා වූ හිටපු අගමැති එස්. ඩබ්ලිව්. ආර්. ඩී බණ්ඩාරනායක මහතා ඝාතනය කොට පනස් වසක් පිරුණේ ඊයේටයි. මේ සමරු උත්සවයටවත් එතුමන් නිර්මාණය කළ ශ්‍රී ලංකා නිදහස් පක්ෂයේ නායකයා හෝ අඩු තරමින් ලේකම්වත් සහභාගි නොවූ බව ආරංචිය. පක්ෂ නිර්මාතෘ බණ්ඩාරනායක මහතා නොසළකා හරින වත්මන් ශ්‍රී ලංකා නිදහස් පක්ෂය නියෝජනය කළේ කිසිම අලෙවියක් නැති අලෙවි මවුලානා වැනි සොක්කන් කිහිප දෙනෙකි.

මේ අතර සති අන්ත සිංහල ඉංග්‍රීසි පුවත්පත් ගණනාවක් වාර්තාකළේ චන්ද්‍රිකා බණ්ඩාරනායක කුමාරතුංග හිටපු ජනාධිපතිනිය ඉන්දියාවේ කෝවිලකදී මී ගවයන් දෙදෙනෙකු යාගයක් සඳහා බිලි දුන් බවය. බොහෝ පුවත්පත් ඇය නම්කොට නොතිබුණ මුත් සමහර ඒවා ඇය නමින්ම හඳුන්නා දී තිබුනේය. මේ නිමල් වෙල්ගම නැමැති ව්‍යාපාරිකයා විසින් පළ කරනු ලබන දිවයින වාර්තා කළ හැටියි.

ඒ උත්තමිය ඉන්දියාවේ මේ කෝවිලට ගිහින් අපිට සාප කරලා. මටයි ගෝඨාභයටයි. අපි දෙන්න හැඳිගෑවිලා යන්න කියලයි පූජාව කරල තියෙන්නේ. අපරාදේ.. ඒකට අර අහිංසක මී ගවයෝ දෙන්නෙක්‌ ගෙන්නලා උන්ගේ බෙලි කපල තමයි මේ පූජාව කරල තියෙන්නේ. මහ මීහරක්‌ වැඩ.. ජනාධිපති මහින්ද ඒ ගැන කතා කළේ තද සිත් වේදනාවකිනි.

හික්කා බීච් ෆෙස්ටිවල් පිළිබඳව වෙන තැනකින් ගත් ඡායාරූප පළ කරමින් අමූලික බොරු ගෙතූ දිවයින මේ සිද්ධියේ ඇත්ත නැත්ත දෙවරක් සොයා බැලුවාද අපි නොදනිමු. ඔවුන් එසේ නොකළේ නම් පුදුම වන්නට දෙයක්ද නැත. නිමල් වෙල්ගමගේ දිවයින දේශපාලන වාසි තකා ඇදබාන චේතිය පච අප දන්නා නිසාය.

චන්ද්‍රිකා කුමාරතුංග හිටපු ජනාධිපතිනිය ඇත්තටම මී ගවයන්  බිලිදුන්නාද?

මගේ අදහස නැත යන්නයි. ඉන්දියාව බහුතරය හින්දු බැතිමතුන් වෙසෙන රටකි. එරට ජනගහණයෙන් හින්දූන්ගේ ප්‍රතිශතය 80% කි. හින්දූහු ගවයා දේවත්වයෙන් අදහති. ඉන්දියාවේ සුළුතර මුස්ලිම් ජනතාව ගවයන් මැරීම ගැන පවා සාම්ප්‍රදායික හින්දූන් එකහෙළා විරුද්ධය. එහෙව් රටක, අහිංසා ධර්මය මත පදනම් වූ හින්දු කෝවිලක මී ගවයින් බිල්ලට දෙන්නේය කීම විහිළුවකි.

මෝඩ පාලකයෝ හැමවිටම තොරතුරු සඳහා කේලාම්කාරයන් මත විශ්වාසය තබති. මේ රජ කපටීන් ගොත ගොතා කියන්නේ තමන් ඇසීමට කැමති කතා මිස ඇත්ත නොවේයයි ඔවුන්ට කල්පනා වන්නේ නැත. තමන්ගේ සතුරන්ගේ වැරදි ගැන මේ කපටියන් කරන ඇදබාන ඕනෑම මුසාවාදයක් ඔවුන් විශ්වාස කරන්නේ ඒ සිතිවිල්ල සුවදායක නිසාය.

චන්ද්‍රිකා කුමාරතුංග හිටපු ජනාධිපතිනිය හැමවිටම හරි යැයි මම නොකියමි. මමද ඇය දරුණු ලෙස විවේචනය කොට ඇත්තෙමි. එහෙත් කවුරුන් ගැන වුවත් සොයා නොබලා බේගල් ඇදබෑම මාධ්‍ය සදාචාරයට හොඳ නැත. අපේ මාධ්‍යකරුවන් කඩේ යනකොට වුවද මීට වඩා ටිකක් හොයා බලා යෑම හොඳය.

Tissainayagam and the land of deaf and dumb

Colombo High Court yesterday sentenced J. S. Tissainayagam to 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment for publishing a magazine named North Eastern Monthly which ‘provoked racism’. Colombo High Court Judge Deepali Wijesundara sentenced him after convicting him on three counts indicted under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and Emergency Law. This is an appealable judgement, and I am certain there will be one.

The judgement per se does not surprise me. What surprises me is the local media response. There was not a single print media – in English and Sinhalese, I do not read Tamil – that did an editorial on this. Not a single editor, including Tissainayagam’s own stood for his/her own colleague. Some Sinhalese media, notably Lankadeepa of the very Wijeya Group that employed Tissainayagam for nearly a decade showed no reservations in expressing their pleasure. I thought there was something called ethics in fourth estate. I was wrong. These are the times of invertebrates.

I never knew Tissainayagam personally. I have glanced over some of his articles to Sunday Times. I never read the controversial magazine. Basically I have little idea what he stood for. But as a lawyer none of the above stops me commenting on the case.

What was the basis of conviction? Let me quote from the press release of International Press Institute.

The evidence against the journalist is based on two articles he wrote in the North Eastern Monthly, and a signed confession, which Tissainayagam later said had been written under duress. According to the written submission made by his defense counsel to the court, the confession was tampered with to suggest that the journalist had taken money from the LTTE. The document says: “The only allegation that he (the accused) did (accept money from a terrorist organization), is based on a fraudulent alteration of the Accused’s purported confession.”

In other words, the judgement was not based on any serious evidence other than a confession. The only occasion a court should take a confession seriously is when the behaviour of the accused supports such confession. One makes a voluntary confession only when one is convinced about guilt and regrets one’s actions. In this case Tissanayagam’s behaviour clearly was the opposite. Then the next factor is to whom he made his confession.  Don’t we know about Sri Lanka’s police? Don’t we know how these confessions were taken?

This reminds me the old joke about KGB. Having left no other way of determining the time, Soviet archaeologists handed over a mummy to KGB. They didn’t have to wait for long. Pat came the answer. Apparently, the mummy has ‘confessed’.

As a lawyer, I have appeared for hundreds of ‘JVP suspects’ during the 1988-9 era who had made similar ‘confessions’. So I know how confessions are made. I know who makes them.  Thanks to Inspector K. P. Newton, former-OIC of Angulana Police station and Vass Gunawardena, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), I do not have to mince words explaining. The entire island knows.

Neither does International Press Institute (IPI) mince words. This is what it says:

No less than twelve journalists have been killed in Sri Lanka since 2006,  according to its Death Watch list, with many more harassed, threatened, and arrested.

In January 2009, Lasantha Wickrematunga, editor-in-chief of the Sunday Leader, was shot at close range in the head and chest by two men on a motorcycle as he drove to work in a suburb of Colombo. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he received emergency surgery, but died a few hours later. Known for his critical reporting on the government, Wickrematunga was a frequent victim of harassment and intimidation, and predicted his own murder in the pages of his newspaper. The initial results of the investigation of his death have not been released.

Obviously the Sinhalese racists are jubilant. Seeing a Tamil in mess always makes them happy. To them, we have the best police and the leagal system in the whole world.

Sadly, on the other hand, this furthers us from civilised world. Sri Lanka was hardly known for its Media Freedom, but this takes us even lower. No better confirmation of the fact than the following brief story on from Chinese Xinhua:

JOURNALIST SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS FOR AIDING TERRORISM IN SRI LANKA   

COLOMBO, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — The High Court on Monday sentenced journalist to 20 years at hard labor for aiding terrorism. J. S. Tissainayagam was arrested by the police’s Terrorism Investigation Division in March 2008 for alleged aiding and abetting terrorism through a magazine he edited.

අපේ කඳුළු කාවින්දි දියණිය වෙනුවෙන් පමණක්ද? අයේෂා, නිරෝෂා දියණියන්ගේ ජීවිත අපට නොවැදගත්ද?

පසුගිය ජූලි 25 වැනිදා ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ස්ථාන දෙකකදී, එකකට එකක් සම්බන්ධයක් නැති එහෙත් එකිනෙකට අතිශයින් සමාන සිද්ධීන් දෙකක් සිදුවූයේය. එකක් කොළඹය. අනෙක පොළොන්නරුවට නුදුරු බකමූනේය.

ජංගම දුරකථනයක් සම්බන්ධ සිද්ධියක් නිසා කොළඹ මියුසියස් විද්‍යාලයේ අනුත්තරා කාවින්දි ජයවර්ධන (14) ගෙළ වැළ ලා දින තුනකට පසුව එදින මිය ගිය අතර බකමූණ ගඟේයාය කනිෂ්ඨ විද්‍යාලයේ අයේෂා ගයානි කුමාරි (15)ද, නිරෝෂා සංජීවනී (15)ද හේතුව අපැහැදිළි සිද්ධියක් නිසා එදිනම කනේරු ඇට කා දිවි තොර කර ගත්හ. සිද්ධීන් දෙකම සම්පූර්ණයෙන් පැහැදිළි නැති මුත් අඩු වැඩි වශයෙන් ගැටවර වියේ ප්‍රේම සම්බන්ධතාවයන් ඒවාට මුල් වන්නට ඇතැයි සිතිය හැකිය. එනයින්ද සිද්ධීන් දෙක අතර යම් සම්බන්ධතාවයක් ඇත.

එකම දිනයේ එක හා සමාන වයසේ මල් කැකුළු තුනක් පරවී ගියේය. සමාජයක් හැටියට අප පොදුවේත් ජන මාධ්‍ය විශේෂයෙනුත් මේ ජීවිත තුනට දී ඇත්තේ එකම අගයක්ද?

නැත. අපි මින් එක ජීවිතයක් ගැන දුක්වෙමු. මහ සයුර පිරෙන්නට මෙන් කඳුළු හෙළමු. පත්තර පිටු පුරවමු. (සති අන්තයේ මා දුටු සියළු පුවත්පත් කාවින්දිගේ මරණය වෙනුවෙන් අඩු තරමින් පිටුවක් වෙන් කොට තිබිණි.) බ්ලොග් ලියමු. වාද කරමු. ශෝකය පළ කරමු. කාවින්දිගේම වයසේ අයේෂාත්, නිරෝෂාත් අපට අවැදගත්ය. ඔවුන් වෙනුවෙන් හෙළන්නට අපට කඳුළු නැත. හරියට “මේ ගොඩේ කෙල්ලො කනේරු ඇට කාල මළාම අපි මොනව කරන්නද?” අහනවා වගේය.

සමාජයේ පිරිහීම ගැන අනුන්ට බණ කියන අපේ සමහර ජන මාධ්‍ය ඇතුළතින් කොයිතරම් පිරිහී ඇත්ද යන්න පෙන්වීමට ඔවුන් මේ සිද්ධි දෙක වාර්තා කළ එකිනෙකට ඉඳුරාම වෙනස් ආකාර පමණක් දැක්වීම සෑහේය.

කාවින්දි පිළිබඳ සිද්ධිය වාර්තා කිරීමේදී පුවත්පත් ඇගේ නම හෝ විද්‍යාලයේ නම සඳහන් නොකිරීමට වග බලාගත්හ. ඇය ගැන සඳහන් කරන ලද්දේද ‘සිසුවිය’ ලෙසිනි.

[මෙම සිද්ධියෙන් මියගොස්‌ ඇත්තේ මාලඹේ පදිංචි නවය වසරේ ඉගෙනුම ලබන 14 හැවිරිදි පාසල් සිසුවියක බව දන්වා සිටි පොලිසිය ඒ පිළිබඳව කීප දෙනකුගෙන් ප්‍රකාශ ලබා ගැනීම සිදු කළ බවත් මහෙස්‌ත්‍රාත් පරික්‍ෂණයට සාක්‌ෂි කැඳවීමට අවශ්‍යව ඇති බවත් කියා සිටියේය. - දිවයින 2009.07.29]

මේ දිවයින පුවත්පතම අයේෂාගේත් නිරෝෂාගේත් මරණ වාර්තා කරන්නේ ඊට ඉඳුරා වෙනස් ලෙසය. එහිදී පාසලේ නම හෝ ඔවුන්ගේ සම්පුර්ණ නම් දෙමාපියන්ගේ නමත් ඇතුළුව සඳහන් කිරීමට දිවයිනට කිසිම පැකිළීමක් නැත. කොළඹ දියණියට ‘සිසුවිය’ ලෙසින් කෙරෙන ආමන්ත්‍රණය ගමේ දියණියන් සම්බන්ධයෙන් ‘නැමැත්තිය’ වෙයි.

දඹුල්ල මූලික රෝහලේදී පැවැති පශ්චාත් මරණ පරීක්‍ෂණයේදී හදිසි මරණ පරීක්‍ෂක පියදාස වනසිංහ මහතා ඉදිරියේ සාක්‍ෂි දුන් මියගිය මොහොට්‌ටාලලාගේ අයේෂා ගයානි කුමාරි සිසුවියගේ මව වන හේරත් මුදියන්සේලාගේ පොඩිමැණිකේ (55) නමැත්තිය මෙසේ පැවැසුවාය.

"මේ මියගියේ මගේ හයවන දරුවා. ලොකු දරුවන් දෙදෙනා විවාහකයි. ඉතිරි අය අපේ ගෙදරයි ඉන්නේ. සිද්ධිය වුණු 24 වැනිදාත් දුව පාසල් ගිහින් ඇවිත් කෑම කාලා නාන්න ගියා. ඊට පැය කාලකට විතර පස්‌සේ බකමූණ පොලිසියෙන් ඇවිත් දුව ඉන්නවද ඇහුවා. මම ඔව් කිව්වා. එතකොටත් ජීප් එකේ තව ළමයෙක්‌ හිටියා. පොලිසියෙන් කිව්වා මේ ළමයි කනේරු ඇට කාලා රෝහලට ගෙනියනවා කියලා. රෑ අටයි තිහට විතර දුව මියගිහින් කියලා දැනගත්තා. දුවගේ ප්‍රේම සම්බන්ධයක්‌ ගැන දන්නේ නැහැ. මොනවා හරි වැරැද්දකට ගුරුවරු දෙමවුපියන් ගෙන්වනවා කියාවි කියන බයට කනේරු ඇට කන්න ඇති." - දිවයින 27-07-2009]

කණගාටුවට මෙන් බ්ලොග් අවකාශයෙහි හැසිරීමද මීට නොවෙනස්ය. කාවින්දි වෙනුවෙන්ම දැනටමත් අඩු තරමින් සිංහල ඉංග්‍රීසි බ්ලොග් විසිපහක් වත් ලියැවී ඇතැයි සිතමි. අයේෂාත් නිරෝෂාත් වෙනුවෙන් එකම බ්ලොග් එකක් වත් නැත. ඔවුන් වෙනුවෙන් කතා කරන්නට කෙනෙක් නැත. හැම කෙනෙකුටම වැදගත් කොළඹ දියණියයි. හැමෝටම වටින්නේ ඇගේ ජීවිතයයි. ගමේ දියණියන් කාටවත් වැදගත් නැත. ඔවුන්ගේ ජීවිත තුට්ටුවකට වත් වටින්නේ නැත.

අනේ, එකම විදියට අපට අහිමි වන ජීවිත වෙනුවෙන් අපට එකම විදියට සලකන්නට බැරි ඇයි? ගමේ-කොළඹ; දුප්පත්-පොහොසත්; සිංහල-දෙමළ භේදයකින් තොරව මිනිස් ජීවිත වලට මිනිස් ජීවිත වලට ලැබිය යුතු සැබෑ වටිනාකම දෙන්නට අපට බැරි ඇයි?

ලක්බිම පුවත්පත කාවින්දි දියණියගේ මරණ දැන්වීම පළ කළේය. කිසිම පුවත්පතක් අයේෂාගේත්, නිරෝෂාගේත් මරණ දැන්වීම් පළ නොකළ නිසා මට ඒවා උපුටා දක්වන්නට නොහැකිය.

අපට අකාලයේ අහිමි වූ මේ දියණියන් තිදෙනාටම සසර කෙළවර නිවන් සුව ප්‍රාර්ථනා කරමි. නැවත මනු ලොව උපදිතොත් මේ පහත් සමාජයේ නොව දුප්පත්-පොහොසත්, ගමේ-කොළඹ, සිංහල-දෙමළ භේදයකින් තොරව හැම දෙනාගේම ජීවිත වලට ගරු කරන සමාජයක උපත ලැබීමට වාසනා වේවායිද ප්‍රාර්ථනා කරමි.

Somawansa and Weerawansa had a great fall: How two cartoonists saw eye to eye

I took a short break from cyberspace as the Western Provincial Council elections, for which I will be a candidate, is around the corner, but had to break it after reading todays newspapers.

Only in an extremely rare occasion that cartoonists of two national newspapers, presumably working independently, get the same idea on the same day. It happened today.

This is how Lankadeepa’s Dasa Hapuvalanage saw the fall of Somawansa Amaresinghe’s JVP and Wimal Weerawansa’s three-wheeler party at the recent provincial council elections.

Anjana Indrajith of Lakbima was perhaps more articulate.

Gamini Sumanasekera barks at Ashoka Serasinghe: Pot calling the kettle black

All eyes are now at Killinochchi, or Oddusudan – but a war elsewhere, perhaps for its hilarity distracts me. This weekend Gamini Sumanasekera, the ultra racist Sunday Divaina editor amused us by releasing his verbal diarrhea against a former colleague at Public Performance Board (Censor Board) Ashoka Serasinghe. His ranting to the rag-sheet he edits had everything – mud, stones, backstabbing and of course jokes – just short of filth. (If we have two more jokers of the ilk of Gamini Sumanasekera surely the Tennyson Cooreys of our times will go jobless.)

To unprofessional Gamini Sumanasekera prostituting media for personal favors is nothing new. This time he comes to save his buddy Prof. Sunil Ariyaratne. Interestingly, Ashoka Serasinghe, Chairman of the Censor Board had questioned the new CD released by Sunil Ariyaratne and Co. with Jayamangala gatha and some other copyright free Buddhist chanting. The law mandates every artistic material issued for public consumption to be first filtered by the Censor Board. Apparently Sunil Ariyaratne, a key political supporter of the President has not obtained prior permission. After all, Wimal Weerawansa is not the only character that shows us his political strength.

No sensible person believes that every literary work should be pre-screened – let alone that done by philistines like Asoka Serasinghe. We do not need Gamini Sumanasekeras to tell that.

Then why Gamini Sumanasekera waited for so long to react? Wasn’t he aware about previous tyrannies of Serasinghe? What this new found free thinker had done when Ashoka Serasinghe banned Ashoka Handagama’s ‘Aksharaya’ and cut several important scenes from Ranjan Ramanayake’s ‘Leader’? Was Gamini Sumanasekera deaf and dumb then? Does his seat get warmed only when Asoka Serasinghe hits his friend?

To make the matters more interesting Asoka Serasinghe was the very lawyer of Sunil Ariyaratne some time back. It surely looks like the client has not paid him for some work.

The best part of the drama is Gamini Sumanasekera’s prepossessed solution. He wants President Mahinda Rajapakse to take the Censor Board under his control. Ho Ho Ho. Please forgive me if you fallen from chair hearing that…There is a Sinhalese saying about assigning a fox to look after chicken. (Nariyata kukullu baara denava)

No secret that all three actors of this drama, Gamini Sumanasekera, Asoka Serasinghe and Sunil Ariyaratne are just pawns in the bigger chess board of our Kurakkan uncle. Still it is amusing to see such pawns fighting with each other.

G.C.E. (O/Level) Mathematics paper controversy

I have not seen the controversial G.C.E. (O/L) Maths paper yet. Neither have I had any expertise in teaching Maths. True, I have studied Maths till degree level as a subject (the other two being Statistics and Chemistry) but this post is nothing about the specific technical points raised by different parties.

Rather I am worried about the damaging trend. We are gradually becoming a society that protests everything we don’t like. A day does not pass without some kind of a protest – sometimes for minor things which could have settled otherwise so easily. If this trend continues that could be a day citizens start protesting in front of courts about the judgments delivered.

Not that I am against protests. It is one of the most powerful tools in any democratic society. But like any other tool it loses the efficacy with abuse. Ultimately we will not be able to use it even for genuine reasons. Prof. Carlo Fonseka once said those who protest most about Medicine syllabi are the first year students – who know least.

I empathise with students who faced difficulties in answering that controversial paper. Still it is certainly not a reason for a political protest. It is sad that some political parties have turned this into a process to gain political milage. (I do not see anybody from UNP joining the bandwagon yet, but whoever does, it is not acceptable)

Not every question paper is 100% perfect. Some easy and some are not. Some do not deviate from the syllabus but some unfortunately do. They are devised by humans. There are accepted procedures for handling such issues.

The examination department surely cannot fail a majority of students. If there is a significant difference from the bell curve from previous years (It is a seriously skewed bell curve in case of Maths – more like a half of the bell) I am sure Department of Examination will be called for an explanation. If it cannot provide that explanation it has to apply corrective measures.

The marks can be adjusted so that nobody would suffer. This happened in 1985, the year before I did A/Ls. The Applied Mathematics paper was so tough. Everybody scored marks less than they would under normal circumstances. The final decision was to adjust the marks by a percentage point of 17%. (A student was expected to answer 12 questions. Each was given marks out of 100 and the aggregate was divided by 10 and not 12) Today we live in a more computerised society. There are so many more appropriate statistical means to adjust marks.

This of course can be done only after the papers are corrected. So why raise voices now? Are we going to accept the paper difficult just because the students say so? Shouldn’t we have some more concrete data?

Role played by media is even worse. How ethical it is to bring the students themselves in front of TV cameras about examination issues? Aren’t they giving the wrong impression to these young students that anything could be achieved by protesting?

Let’s do politics, of course, but for everyone’s sake keep education out of politics. If this trend continues one day the students will start protesting even about their term test papers. Is that we want?

Will the puritans – Media and Central Bank – now step forward and cast the first stone at Sakwithi Ranasinghe?

Sakwithi Ranasinghe is virtually crucified. Stable gates are tightened. That should make everybody happy – at least till next such event. Time to wipe out the entire episode from mass reminiscence and move to cricket, if not Kilinochchi.

So this might be my last post on Sakwithi. (BTW, I will appear in TNL’s Bihidora on Wednesday 9.30 pm to speak on the subject.)

Nalaka Gunawardene disrobes the media prostitution. The very media now chastise Sakwithi sir, once willingly slept with him to build his larger than life image. Media moguls could have been a bit more discretionary on advertisements to minimize the damage. Apparently they did not care and the gullible mice followed the Pied Piper. So how ethical is it for media to wash its hands and shed crocodile tears now? (Ironically, ‘Lankadeepa’ of Sept 28 simultaneously brands D. K. Udayasiri of Sakwithi’s ilk as a bogus or ‘hora’ investor in its lead news, and carries a half page ad for him inside!)

Let me take on the other puritan – The Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

I do NOT – repeat NOT – blame Central Bank for not playing the role of the regulator, it isn’t. Central Bank ‘s mandate is limited only to supervise registered finance companies, and Sakwithi sir was not within that category. He should have been taken care by the Police, but what use blaming a force headed by an IGP who expects video clips from rape victims? I hear few SPs and ASPs are among those who were taken for a ride by Sakwithi sir. I am not surprised.

I blame Central Bank for a different reason – creating the breeding ground for Sakwithis.

It is simple arithmetic. Inflation is as high as 25-30%. Maximum interest commercial banks pay for fixed deposits is 16-18%. Registered finance companies go a little further but still cannot catch the inflation demon. So even a fifth grader can figure out if you leave your money at a bank, by the end of the year you are worse off.

Investing in real assets is the only intelligent option to beat inflation, but not everyone is wise. Plus there are issues with real assets. Lands do not come in customizable sizes and gold is difficult to protect. So when Sakwithi says he offers Rs. 4,000 per month for a deposit of Rs. 100,000 (that is about 50% annual interest) they jump in without thinking twice.

It is not that they are greedy. They are made to run non-stop for mere survival. When the formal financial sector cannot address their needs they turn for informals. Sakwithi Ranasinghe, strictly speaking, might not have been a crook- he could have been an investor who failed by taking risks too high. (not that I endorse it) An interest rate of 50% is not as high it seems for an investor in construction industry. Minus inflation it is about 20% and building material prices escalate at a higher rate.

If Central Bank thinks they can stop Sakwithis by placing advertisements in newspapers and exposing few like him once in a while they are badly mistaken. It is like trying to control Dengue by killing mosquitoes. No matter how many killed, mosquitoes will be there as long as their breeding grounds exist. So do risky investments.

None other than W. A. Wijewardene, the very Deputy Governor of Central Bank, recently equated ‘Inflation’ to ‘terrorism’. If so, Sakwithi is a suicide bomber. Sheer vigilance is necessary, but not adequate to prevent him. Death of one suicide bomber does not prevent others. It is a larger game. Whether it likes or not Central Bank should take the inflation bull by its horns, sooner than later. Unless it does so, there is little use in blaming Sakwithi Ranasinghes.

Edwin Ariyadasa: A naive victim or a willing accomplice in ‘Sakwithi Ranasinghe’ scam?

I am sad to pen this post.

Edwin Ariyadasa, as an intellect and a writer once made a profound impact on my life. Our generation, unlike the youngsters today, had no Internet or even TV. It was all books, radio and newspapers. Ariyadasa’s realm was the last two.

He was an excellent presenter. Precise and concise in facts, he knew exactly what the readers looked for.

What made Ariyadasa unforgettable were the contributions to ‘Navayugaya’ and ‘Silumina’. I still remember him explaining in mid 1970s how future generations would start their days by reading newspapers electronically delivered to homes. Then it was unthinkable – I wouldn’t have then believed it to happen even in the west – let alone here. Strangely that is what we do today. May not be at home, but most of us read online versions of news early morning. Suffice to describe the visionary he once was.

Unlike most writers of the time he never tried pushing a political ideology. A true unbiased ‘walking encyclopedia’ – no more, no less. I cannot be the only one who then saw the future in his eyes.

So how would the news of his ‘partner’ (or employer – as Ariyadasa emphasizes, saying he was paid Rs. 100,000 per month for the services) running away with billions of hard earned rupees sound to his once fans like myself?

Personally, I am disappointed. Not because I think Ariyadasa was a part of anything that happened, but no denial that he endorsed a dubious character. An irresponsible act – to say the least. What does Ariyadasa now say about his name appearing in full page advertisements in Lankadeepa inviting depositors? Can he claim unawareness? What about the claims by depositors that Ariyadasa encouraged them to deposit? Does he deny that?

Those who sleep with dogs will get up with lice. (Ballan samaga nidagath vita mekkan samaga negiteemata siduve) A wonderful saying attributed to a famous Sinhala journalist. Sad that Edwin Ariyadasa had to learn it the hard way.

Ariyadasa is not alone. This episode also brings the story of a certain Computer professor into our minds. No need for a name as he is no more. Just like Ariyadasa he too had a credibility built up for a lifetime which he risked for seemingly minor benefits.

After his retirement from the University this Computer Professor had a comfortable life ahead him with no worries. He had no financial issues because both his sons were then employed by two international IT firms. Still his sheer unwillingness to give up power once yielded made him accepting a chair at a government organization for a compensation of Rs. 100,000 per month – exactly the same thirty pieces of silver Ariyadasa received.

This power, of course came with a price tag. His political masters wanted him to manipulate a tender of USD 15 million so that a firm represented by a close relative of a VVIP wins it. This was no easy task, as the other party offer was both technically and financially superior. The offer of VVIP’s close relative was USD 1 million more and not represented by a local partner – a mandatory condition in tender. Still this stupid old man did the honurs and awarded the tender to the wrong party – whose offer should have not even been short listed in the first place.

What got him was the media. Revelations by ‘Sunday Leader’ and ‘Ravaya’ perhaps added to his guilty consciousness. That guilty feeling finally took his life. A stupid man, who could have lived for another ten years easily, lost his life being a pawn of a much bigger political game.

Thanhaya jaayati soko – greed generates sorrow. This is something both Ariyadasa and the said Computer Professor should have known. Latter is now dead, buried and conveniently forgotten even by his closest disciples – but we hope Ariyadasa is still not too late.
