University of Colombo gives “MAHA RAJAANO” a fake doctorate; but can they give him a BRAIN?

Till yesterday I thought only Mervin Silvas and Dhanawardena Guruges need fake doctorates to boost their otherwise shallow profiles. I also thought only dubious ‘universities’ like Medicina Alternativa offered such fake degrees. It was a surprise to see a prestigious institution like University of Colombo, apparently the only Sri Lankan one to be selected under the best 100 Asian universities by Asiaweek in 2002, joining the same game by bamboozling the gullible offering them something they rightly never deserve.

This is what the state owned ‘Sunday Observer’ reported:

The Senate of the University of Colombo unanimously resolved that the Degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) be conferred on President Mahinda Rajapakse. The Senate has also resolved that the Degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) be conferred on Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse.

The degrees will be conferred on President Rajapaksa and Gotabhaya Rajapaksa in recognition of their yeoman service to the nation in safeguarding sovereignty, territorial integrity; restoring peace and harmony among all Sri Lankan communities and uplifting the image of Sri Lanka within the international community, a statement of the Senate of the Colombo University states.

Political achievements needs appreciation, no doubt, but why mix them with academic honours? The academic honour system should be dedicated to recognize the appreciable work done by experts in their respective fields, and should not be exploited by corrupted and stupid politicians to boost their images. Can’t we just have some respectable universities offering these honorary degrees to those who truly deserve them, instead of making the whole system a big joke?

Let so called maha sanga honour the politicians they blindly worship. ‘Sri Rohana Janaranjana’ and ‘Vishva Keerthy Sri Thrisinhaladhishvara’ are quite mouthfuls. That is more than enough. Let the joke end there. There is absolutely no need for University of Colombo to join the game making fun of a stupid man. If he wants to be the emperor, let him enjoy that illusion, for this limited period, till he loses the next election. Why subject the poor man to a never ceasing stream of jokes by offering him fake doctorates?

How can MR deserve any title when he don’t even obey the 5 key principles of Buddhism (Pansil)?

    Five Precepts:

    1 Do not take life
2 Do not take what is not given
    3 Do not distort facts
4 Refrain from misuse of the senses
5 Refrain from self-intoxication through alcohol or drugs

    that image is a fake..

honestly.. i was laughing when i saw it.. and tried to IMAGINE how can anyone be a bigger idiot that mr. bush jr!! but then, i noticed the (not so) clever photophop work!!
NO LCD in the history of laptops have that kinda chunky frame!!

and no laptop in the history has the power chord attaching to its monitor… so its a fake.. just like the one showing prbha watching his own corpse on TV i guess…

Its OK to criticize people. But I think criticism should be based on facts. Who ever wrote that main article is clearly has some strong political views against Mr. Rajapaksha. I think is opposition towards Mr. President is popping out, over all his rational facts(facts in written, not the image).

In written facts, this man may be not so clever as the writer, yet he knows his game better than any president or any politician of his time and before his time in Sri Lanka(May be some of the so called international community too). I have to say he has always been one step ahead of Mr. Wickramasinghe.

To Devika’s comment – I think we should talk about presidents in any country without considering first two of pancil. Breaking them is part of their job. We should focus on reasons for breaking them. weather those reasons are truthful or not.

The president should be honored for what he did to the country,But giving these type of Sri rohana janaranjana and Vishva keerthi thrisinhaladishwara is only a simple way of gaining popularity. I’m sure that he already got a Sri Rohana Janranjana before he got the presidency. This is not what he had to do at this moment. He is taking all the presence himself.
What about leaders like JR Jayawardena with his Wadamarchchi operation, and wahat about Chandrika Bandaranayake regaining the Jaffna Peninsula.Together with our leaders our great war heroes such as General Kobbekaduwa and people like General Janaka Perera. How can we forget them.
All the real patriotic should get together and make an alliance with our everloving UNP to defeat this deadly government.

It is shamefull to write about Medicina Alternativa as duboius. There are many universities doing bussiness and second UoC and Medicina Alternativa issued honarary degrees and Harvar has issued such degrees too. Finally if you have some political differences keep it to the topic concerned don’t use other universities name with in it.
