Edwin Ariyadasa: A naive victim or a willing accomplice in ‘Sakwithi Ranasinghe’ scam?
Posted by Ajith on September 28, 2008
Edwin Ariyadasa, as an intellect and a writer once made a profound impact on my life. Our generation, unlike the youngsters today, had no Internet or even TV. It was all books, radio and newspapers. Ariyadasa’s realm was the last two.
He was an excellent presenter. Precise and concise in facts, he knew exactly what the readers looked for.
What made Ariyadasa unforgettable were the contributions to ‘Navayugaya’ and ‘Silumina’. I still remember him explaining in mid 1970s how future generations would start their days by reading newspapers electronically delivered to homes. Then it was unthinkable – I wouldn’t have then believed it to happen even in the west – let alone here. Strangely that is what we do today. May not be at home, but most of us read online versions of news early morning. Suffice to describe the visionary he once was.
Unlike most writers of the time he never tried pushing a political ideology. A true unbiased ‘walking encyclopedia’ – no more, no less. I cannot be the only one who then saw the future in his eyes.
So how would the news of his ‘partner’ (or employer – as Ariyadasa emphasizes, saying he was paid Rs. 100,000 per month for the services) running away with billions of hard earned rupees sound to his once fans like myself?
Personally, I am disappointed. Not because I think Ariyadasa was a part of anything that happened, but no denial that he endorsed a dubious character. An irresponsible act – to say the least. What does Ariyadasa now say about his name appearing in full page advertisements in Lankadeepa inviting depositors? Can he claim unawareness? What about the claims by depositors that Ariyadasa encouraged them to deposit? Does he deny that?
Those who sleep with dogs will get up with lice. (Ballan samaga nidagath vita mekkan samaga negiteemata siduve) A wonderful saying attributed to a famous Sinhala journalist. Sad that Edwin Ariyadasa had to learn it the hard way.
Ariyadasa is not alone. This episode also brings the story of a certain Computer professor into our minds. No need for a name as he is no more. Just like Ariyadasa he too had a credibility built up for a lifetime which he risked for seemingly minor benefits.
After his retirement from the University this Computer Professor had a comfortable life ahead him with no worries. He had no financial issues because both his sons were then employed by two international IT firms. Still his sheer unwillingness to give up power once yielded made him accepting a chair at a government organization for a compensation of Rs. 100,000 per month – exactly the same thirty pieces of silver Ariyadasa received.
This power, of course came with a price tag. His political masters wanted him to manipulate a tender of USD 15 million so that a firm represented by a close relative of a VVIP wins it. This was no easy task, as the other party offer was both technically and financially superior. The offer of VVIP’s close relative was USD 1 million more and not represented by a local partner – a mandatory condition in tender. Still this stupid old man did the honurs and awarded the tender to the wrong party – whose offer should have not even been short listed in the first place.
What got him was the media. Revelations by ‘Sunday Leader’ and ‘Ravaya’ perhaps added to his guilty consciousness. That guilty feeling finally took his life. A stupid man, who could have lived for another ten years easily, lost his life being a pawn of a much bigger political game.
Thanhaya jaayati soko – greed generates sorrow. This is something both Ariyadasa and the said Computer Professor should have known. Latter is now dead, buried and conveniently forgotten even by his closest disciples – but we hope Ariyadasa is still not too late.

In Sri Lanka, Top to bottom… most of the population is made of hypocrites and idiots who believe in them. Few people who understand this live like aliens and feel like aliens.

That means Aruyadasa is not so intelligent or extraordinary. He could not figure out a thing or a better crook even than Sakvithi to have better things in both worlds. If it is the the earlier case he should handover all the trophies that he got as he is bellow average citizen. At least we know that he does not deserve them.
I feel sorry about the thousands esp the disabled who credited with this duo.

This is a strong message for any intellec in present day Sri Lanka, not to be a part of rogues with political/underworld connections.
Whatever the good work done by Ariyadasayo is now gone with wind and has to live the remaining few years in his life as a crook and a dishonest rogue.
This is the very reason that I left Sri Lanka though I had a good job in a medical faculty of a leading university in Sri Lanka.

Hi,
I will add this for completion.I do not have any thing against Mr Ariyadasa. I respect him only because he is a senior citizen. I also saw that he told that he or any one in his family hasn’t deposited any money with Sakvithi. He has further stated all their savings are in a private bank. That means he did not have any confidence in it nor did he trust them.
Mr Ariyadasa what made you encourage other poor people who did not have such insight as you to deposit?
Also why do we two levels of justice. Instant justice or even death for a guy who steals a coconut and a more lethargic justice or nothing for people who do these things? Can any body answer?

I was in vacation in Sri lanka in last Aughust and noticed one attractive paper advertisement of this so called ‘Sakvithi’ accidentally. I never heard about this guy and his buisnesses. Absolutely i felt something wrong with it’s contents and could not believe those statesments.
I was so sympathetic to the people go behind this crony and understood that he managed to get hold of few public figures, mainly Edwin Ariyadasa in his endeavour to bully the people. Infact I had very poor reputation on Mr. Ariyadasa from my childhood since he has never being an intellect but a person who had free access to media, and who can tell a lie as a truth to poor and ignorant people. Apparently what he did only traslation of the scientific media and adding spices to them before presentation to the general public.
So i was not really worried , and had no questions about his part on this scam. If he has a bit of brain he should realize that he is a part of this scam and it is obvious if you rationaly go through those paper advertisements. if he had a slightest suspicion or misagreement on those statessments he could have act as an intelect or more correctly a senior citizen according to the current law in SL, at least log an entry in Police.
All these post incidental immature statesments show us how poor intellect he is and how he maitained the phylosopy of bullying the people with master crony-Sakwithy. i know the law should be common to junior and senior citizen in developed countries but i have no idea about SL.

“Assisting others whenever and wherever one can, makes a person a true human being. Everyone must consider love, compassion and kindness to be the noblest virtues a man can possess” – Edwin Ariyadasa (courtesy http://www.edwinariyadasa.org)
As a senior citizen, who is much respected in society, with a number of accolades to his credit and a website where he screams out assisting others, Mr Ariyadasa has not only fooled the poor who invested their hard earned money with Sakvithi, but the society as a whole. Those who presented him with the many awards, the media, the private and public institutions and even someone like me who would have thought ‘here’s a man who values compassion and human kindness’ by just visiting his website.
Those who do wrong the most are the ones that pretend they are the most compassionate and innocent of all. This is what I gathered after visiting Mr Ariyadasa’s emotional website. I wonder what his response is to the poor blind man who invested with Sakvithi to provide a better future for his children. Will Mr Ariyadasa atleast compensate this man with his wealth? If he can, thats human compassion. Let’s wait and see if justice/human compassion prevails.

Yeah!
will see. if he has at least a drop of kindness and compassion in his eyes he should show it to pulic.

I totally agree with what Sinhale says. Ariadasa’s titles should be ripped off as he is not great enough to hold them.
